The Economics of Tobacco and Tobacco Taxation in Egypt
This Report was written by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT) in Egypt. The report begins with an overview of tobacco use in the country, which is currently very high, including prevalence, types of tobacco products, and the trends over time. The researchers also assess the supply chain and the price and income elasticities of demand for tobacco products. Finally, the researchers discuss tobacco control efforts in Egypt, focusing on tobacco taxes. The report concludes with recommendations for policy makers to improve the country's tobacco tax policies by aligning them with best practices to raise additional tax revenues, improve public health, and protect vulnerable populations like youth.
