Landscape Report on Tobacco Consumption and Taxation in Lebanon
This Report was written by the American University Beirut (AUB) in Lebanon. The report begins with an overview of tobacco use in the country, which is currently very high, including prevalence, types of tobacco products, and the trends over time. The researchers also assess the supply chain and demand for tobacco products, as well as price and income elasticities of demand for tobacco products and illicit trade. Finally, the researchers discuss tobacco control efforts in Jordan, focusing on tobacco taxes. Simulating an increase in tobacco taxes, the findings show that this would reduce consumption while raising additional tax revenues. The report concludes with recommendations for policy makers to strengthen tobacco control by aligning tobacco taxation policies with evidence-based best practices and improving coordination between relevant stakeholders.
